APPEAL OF THE DIRECTOR OF ENVIRONMENT ON WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY- JUNE 05, 2021

World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated every year on 5th June. World Environment Day (WED) had established in 1972 after negotiations on the integration of human intera ctions and the environment during the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. The First World Environment Day celebrated during 1974, which focused on major campaign for environmental issues like marine pollution, increasing population, raising awareness about global warming, sustainable consumption, and wildlife crime.

World Environment Day 2021 is celebrated on June 5th, 2021 with a major focus theme As
                        “ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION

Ecosystem restoration means practice of renewing of ecosystems that have been degraded or destroyed in the past years, as well as conserving the ecosystems that are still intact. Healthier ecosystems, with richer biodiversity, provide greater benefits, such as more fertile soils, bigger yields of timber and fish, and larger stores of greenhouse gases.

The Department of Environment, Government of Tamil Nadu has identified focus areas where there needs to be interventions to achieve the sustainable eco-restoration activities. They are Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation initiatives, Coastal Regulation Zone Management, Eco-restoration of water bodies, Preparation of Environmental Management Plans for towns, Creating Environment awareness in schools and colleges through Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), Eco-clubs and National Green Corp (NGC) and Synergy with Universities/Research Institutes to build capacity for research and training.

A wide range of events are created globally to increase the understanding of the important role of ecosystem in our Environment. On this World Environment Day, the Department of Environment has been organizing various events viz., creating awareness and Tree Plantation Programme to college students through a virtual platform.

I urge all to take responsibility for joining hands with common people, Government agencies, NGOs and people to enhance public awareness through virtual platform to protect our Environment and Eco System Restoration.
