Preparation of State of Environment Report (SoER) for Tamil Nadu

The preparation of the State of Environment (SoE) Report was proposed during the year 2014-15. As the non-recurring grant for SoER preparation from the MoEF during the year 2014-15 was received only during March 2015, the project has been carried over to the next financial year 2015-16. The SoER will provide a general picture of the State, its bio- physical and socio-economic condition and an understanding of how human activities affect the environmental conditions and its implications on human health and economic well being. It will also provide an overview of the outcome of responses such as policy initiatives, legislative reform and changes in policy behavior. The Report will document the present status of key sectors that are concerned with the environment; and the issues that impact these sectors. The sectors will be presented as distinct sections that follow a uniform style of presentation containing a general description, past trends, current activities, policies and schemes in existence and plans for future. These sectors are demography, agriculture and horticulture, forests and wildlife, biodiversity, water resources, coastal and marine environment, energy, industrialization, urbanization, archaeology, tourism, pollution, waste management and infrastructure. The general concept of SoER suggested by the MoEF will be followed and the SoER Tamil Nadu will be drafted in line with it. The data collected for I-SBEID will also be used wherever applicable.  The ENVIS Centre of the Department of Environment has already started the preparation of the State of Environment Report of Tamil Nadu 2015 with support from Madras school of Economics, Chennai which has been selected as the consultant. The Report will be prepared using multi-layered participatory process involving the Government Departments, Non Governmental Organizations and the Public.
