World Environment Day awareness programme was held on 23.5.2018 at riverfront of Vaigai river, Madurai under the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”, on the motto of Cleanliness is Service”. Thiru A. V.Venkatachalam I.F.S., Director of Environment, Dr.Aneesh Sekhar, IAS., Commissioner, Corporation of Madurai, Thiru Dabasis Jana IFS, Chief Conservator of Forest, Madurai Circle, Thiru.K . Rammohan, District Environmental Engineer, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Madurai, Thiru. Marimuthu, Chief Educational Officer, Madurai, Tmt Amuthua, District Educational Officer, Madurai, have participated in the River front cleaning programme along with NGC, Eco Club Students, NGO's, Self Help Groups, Staff and Officers of various Government departments. Pamphlets, Handbills, Gloves, T - Shirts, Caps, cleaning materials such as brooms, dust bin etc. have been provided to all the participants. The participants carried out the cleaning exercise around 1.5km distance in Vaigai river of Yanikkal area. The programme started at 7.30 am in the morning which a group of 4 batches and disposed off the accum ulated waste through Corporation of Madurai. Volunteers from Self help Groups have been brought to the venue in the hired vehicles. The NGC students along with participants have taken a pledge under the topic “Beat Plastic Pollution”, before commencing the River Cleaning activities.
