Database

The State has had a long history of taxonomical surveys and ecological research, the available information on its biodiversity is rather scattered. Hence the following databases on biodiversity were developed by ENVIS Centre of the Department of Environment in collaboration with various research organisations.

ALGAL DATABASE
Database on Algal diversity was prepared by Dr. M.Baluswami, Madras Christian College, Chennai. He has reported that a total number of 668 taxa of freshwater and 128 taxa of Marine alga species in Tamil Nadu..........


 


FUNGAL DATABASE

Database on Fungal diversity was prepared by Dr. Natarajan, University of Madras, Chennai, a total number of 1077 fungal species from 370 genera were recorded in Tamil Nadu.........

 

LICHEN  DATABASE

This database was prepared by Dr. G.N.Hariharan, M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai. In India, around 2000 - 2200 species are known to occur and in Tamil Nadu a total of 555 lichen species have been reported.

 

BRYO FLORA DATABASE
Database on Bryo Flora of Tamil Nadu was prepared by Dr. Dulip Daniels, Scott Christian College, Nagercoil. He has identified around 121 species of liverworts and 682 species of mosses in the Western Ghats of Tamil Nadu............
 


PTERIDOPHYTE  DATABASE
Dr. V.S.Manickam has observed in this work that the terrestrial species constitutes more than 46 percent (90 species), while lithophytes constitute 19 percent (67 species) in Tamil Nadu.

 

FLORAL DATABASE
Dr. D. Narasimhan, Madras Christian College, Chennai recorded 5239 of flowering plants in Tamil Nadu...........

 

MEDICINAL PLANTS OF TAMIL NADU DATABASE  
This database  on medicinal Plants of Tamil Nadu was prepared by FRLHT. 
It has been reported that a total of 840 species of medicinal plants are found in Tamil Nadu.

 

 

FAUNAL DATABASE
Dr. K. Venkataraman, Zoological Survey of India, Chennai has published about 595 species of freshwater fauna, 2247 species of marine fauna and 1898 species of terrestrial faunal species available in Tamil Nadu.
